Excessive or chronic stress has a significant impact on our health and well-being. Stress impacts us physically, emotionally and socially. The American Medical Association states that 60% - 80% of primary care office visits may have a stress-related component. Data from The Centers for Disease Control indicates that work-related stress is the leading workplace health problem and is costly to organizations. The American Psychological Association reports that stress is a key driver of chronic illness and that 75% of health-care costs are associated with chronic illness.
WebMD articles reflect that 43% of all adults suffer from the effects of stress and 75% - 90% of all doctor visits are for stress-related complaints. The National Institutes of Health and many other reputable sources identify medical conditions impacted by stress which include: headaches | high blood pressure | heart problems | cancer | lowered immunity | diabetes | skin conditions | asthma | arthritis | digestive disorders | teeth grinding | insomnia | and obesity. WebMD further reports that over 50% of people will have an emotional disorder over the course of their lifetime, often due to untreated stress conditions. The most prevalent emotional disorders, anxiety and depression, are both impacted significantly by stress. Other emotional/behavioral conditions associated with stress include anger issues, panic disorder, alcohol overuse, and drug abuse.
Fortunately, there are many effective ways to manage and reduce stress. While medication is frequently used to treat stress, significant changes can be made without medication, or in combination with medication. Interventions that have proven to be effective include: clinical counseling | coaching | meditation | qigong and tai chi | massage | yoga | diet and nutrition changes.
